What is Narrative Essay Writing Prompt?

An essay , as defined in most of the previous blogs related to the keyword ‘essay’, in this site, is usually a short piece of writing that is written from the writer’s view point. Essays are very common. Everyone is used to writing essays. We have been doing so in schools, colleges etc. There are mainly four types of essays. They are descriptive essay, narrative essay, persuasive essay and expository essay. Descriptive essay is one in which a particular person, place or a thing is explained in detail. In short it enables us to understand the descriptions through our five senses. Narrative essay is a sequence of events that took place at a particular point of time. It is usually written in first person. Expository writing is directs the readers to carry out a task in a particular ways suggested by the writer, for example, a recipe. Finally, persuasive writing is one in which the writer influences a particular thought or action in the minds of the reader. A prompt is one that acts as a reminder or a cue to something that a person wishes to do. Narrative essay writing prompt gives the readers a clue as to what can be written for a narrative essay. The following are some examples.
My first day at school – This could be about your experiences when you first went to school. You can write about the atmosphere on that day, how you felt before entering the school -either nervous or confident- what came into your mind when you saw the teachers and fellow students, whether you missed home, the way the teachers took class and so many things related to the school. You must remember that you need not describe these things, rather narrate them. You should write them in the order of events.
A day with my pet dog- This could be about the activities that you carried out with your pet dog at a particular point of time. Remember that this kind of a topic can be written as both a descriptive essay and a narrative essay. When you write about your experiences with the pet dog, it is a narrative essay. Whereas when you explain the appearance of the dog, what it eats etc, it becomes a descriptive essay. So, ‘My pet dog’ could be descriptive, while ‘A day with my pet dog’ would be narrative. One must be aware of the difference. So, here you can narrate the incidents in which you and the dog did something together and so on.
Our sports day function- This could be about the events that happened during your sports day. You can write about what the chief guest and others spoke, the myriad events that were held like running race, shot-put, march past etc. You can also mention who won the competitions, how you felt that day and so on.
