Good Essay – The Essentials of a Good Essay

What is a Good Essay?

Introduction

It is quite common for students to be given many assignments in schools and colleges. Most of the assignments are in the form of essays, term papers and occasionally research papers. However, out of all these genres, essays are frequently preferred to other types of writing. Essays are quite simple to write and read. Simply put, they are short pieces of writing that contain the view points of the writer. Usually, an ideal essay is split into five paragraphs. There are mainly four types of essays. They are descriptive essay, narrative essay, expository essay and persuasive essay. There are other types like argumentative, reflective and so on but these four are the main types that are usually observed. A good essay should follow a particular essay format. It is as follows.

  • • Introduction
  • • Main Body
  • • Conclusion

The introduction is one of the main parts of the essay that introduces the topic to the readers. It should contain a brief summary of the essay. It can be started with a famous quote or an anecdote or some other such example. The objective is to catch the attention of the readers. The attention of the target audience is very important to the writer and he must go to all means to obtain that. The first few lines of the introduction can be as creative as possible but ensure that you do not run away with your imagination! Whatever you say must be relevant to the subject matter of the essay.

The main body is the meat of the essay. It contains all the necessary points and these are discussed in detail. Relevant samples and explanations could make it interesting to read. Again, in the pretext of giving examples, one should not stray away from the topic. Ensure that all that you write revolves around one central theme or point. Thus the main body, as the term suggests, is the main part of the essay.

The conclusion is the final part. One can restate the points that have been already mentioned in the other parts of the essay. This is only to remind the readers about the importance of such points and does not mean that redundancy is generally allowed. Repetition of many points will make the essay least interesting. Therefore, the conclusion plays an important role in that it tests how effectively you can draw an end to the essay.

One should remember to keep the sentences simple and easily comprehensible. Also, the title of the essay gives an added credit to the essay if it is eye-catching. It is advisable to keep the word count of the title to a maximum of 8 or 10 words. Otherwise it will be similar to a sentence and the readers will find no difference between the title and the rest of the essay. Here, the entire purpose of having a title is lost. The title must be able to capture the essence of the entire essay. Refer custom essays to know more!
